Consultation has concluded

The City of Mount Gambier wishes to thank all community members who provided a suggestion for the name of the former site of the Mount Gambier Hospital.

Council has reviewed your suggestions and the following 5 names have been shortlisted:

  • Elizabeth Knight Reserve - Elizabeth Knight was a pioneer of Mount Gambier who served the community as a nurse and mid-wife for many decades. When she arrived in Mount Gambier in 1853, there were only seven inhabited places in the settlement. Elizabeth ran a private hospice from a residence in Herbert Street and was one of the first nurses at the Mount Gambier Hospital.
  • Maruwangula Bupik - meaning Hospital Hill (‘take care of/look after' + hill) in Boandik Language
  • Molly Ogden Park - Frances Mary Ogden (known as Molly Ogden), was Matron of the Mount Gambier Hospital during the 1950's and 1960's and was known as a dedicated staff member who was committed to her nursing profession.
  • Nurses Park
  • The Old Hospital Reserve

The City of Mount Gambier welcomes your vote on one preferred name from the shortlist before 4:00pm on 28 August 2015. The name receiving the most votes at this point will be presented to Council as the preferred option.

About the site

The Old Mount Gambier Hospital site commenced its transformation in October, 2013. The Laundry was preserved due to the distinctive barrel vaulted curved roof design and the panoramic view over the city.

It is envisaged that the laundry's position on the slopes of a hill will make it the ideal venue for concerts and other special events, with the expansive shelter, toilets and lighting creating a year-round gathering space. Council has already received enquiries about booking the venue for weddings and other functions.

The City of Mount Gambier has used a significant portion of the pulverized material to restore the surrounding land and return the site to its original contours. With the large expanse of grass and ample parking this site can be used all year round for a variety of activities.

Should you have any queries, or require additional information please contact Council's Director Operational Services, Daryl Sexton on (08) 08 8721 2520
