A community vision for our regional capital

As South Australia's regional capital, Mount Gambier serves as a central point to access essential infrastructure, services, business, employment and education not only for local residents but also for those in the surrounding towns and areas.

Much has changed in Mount Gambier since the last vision was crafted in 2011. This is why, hand in hand with our community, we're commencing the development of a new Community Vision named Mount Gambier 2035.

In shaping our vision for 2035, over the past few months we invited our community to read the 'Our City Now' and 'Future Considerations' Infographics and share their thoughts about what we collectively value about our city, how we want others to describe us and the opportunities to embrace or challenges to overcome as a community as we approach 2035.

Thanks to those who took the time to talk with a member of our team at one of numerous community drop in sessions, those children or young people who entered our young thinkers competition or those who submitted feedback via a post card or hard-copy survey.

We have reviewed all the feedback received and have identified some key themes for further exploration with key stakeholders and community members as part of a targeted consultation and engagement process. The key themes are as follows:

1. A city with considered population targets, achieving sustainable, high-quality services, opportunity and activity.

2. A city committed to preserving and enhancing our environment through sustainability and custodianship.

3. A proud, inclusive and welcoming city with known values and community connection.

4. A safe and supportive city with a focus on the health and wellbeing of its people.

5. A vibrant and creative city, with a living narrative, that owns and celebrates its rich cultural identity.

6. A thriving and resilient city which elevates its profile, based on its unique environmental and economic landscape.

7. A well-planned and interconnected city with robust infrastructure supporting sustainable growth.

For further information about what we heard from the community and the process, please refer to our Phase 1 - Engagement Summary Report.

Exploring our cultural identity

Communities are a source of identity. Each community has its own traditions, values, and norms that shape its identity over time. These aspects are really important because they give us pride, a sense of belonging, and a responsibility to each other.

In hearing from our community through the Mount Gambier 2035 project, it is clear that the culture and identity means a lot to us and plays an important role in shaping our plans for the future. But how do we put 'our identity' into words?

To assist our Community Panel in capturing our cultural identity, we're calling on members of our community to share their thoughts about the aspects of this place that makes us who we are.

What is 'uniquely Mount Gambier'? What makes us tick? What makes us...us? Share your thoughts here.
