People in a park running, riding a bike, doing yoga, a family walking the dog and someone reading under a tree

The City of Mount Gambier is home to an abundance of parks, reserves and sporting facilities that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy. Council know recreation and open spaces are important to our community, whether it's for sporting activities, exercise, socialising with family and friends or walking the dog.

To continue to provide quality, well-planned spaces and guide the future direction of open spaces and facilities in Mount Gambier, Council has embarked on the development of a Sport, Recreation and Open Spaces Strategy.

Sport, recreation and open spaces not only contribute to the beautification and liveability of our city but play an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the community.

Research has shown open space provides a broad range of benefits including:

  • Promotion of physical fitness through participation in organised sport;
  • Promotion of physical and mental wellbeing though casual informal activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, use of fitness equipment and use of play spaces;
  • Providing places for the community to come together whether that is a picnic with family and friends or attendance at a large event;
  • Providing for activity with pets and companion animals such as the provision of off-lease areas for dogs;
  • Providing natural spaces for recreation, relaxation and reflection;

To assist in the development of this strategy we want to hear from you about how you use and interact with open space, including our existing strengths and opportunities for improvement as a city.
