CBD Master Plan

Just imagine...

We're entering a new chapter, as the City of Mount Gambier explores the development of a Central Business District (CBD) Master Plan to revitalise and help guide the long term future of the city centre.

Why a CBD Master Plan?

A thriving CBD is about more than buildings and streets. It is about people, place, pride and creating a city centre that locals enjoy, visitors remember and future generations value. The Master Plan will guide how the CBD grows and changes over time, supports local businesses and community initiatives to thrive and make it easier and more welcoming for everyone to engage with.

Council is working with a team of leading experts from across Australia who will be bringing insights and ideas to the conversation.

The Plan will also build on feedback gathered from our community during the 2024 Place Score Study, which looked at how the city centre is performing and invited the community to share what matters most for improving the CBD. Feedback highlighted a range of opportunities, including:

• Finding a better balance between cars and people in streets and public spaces
• Exploring opportunities for inner-city living
• Supporting a stronger evening and after-hours economy
• Investing in greening and shade
• Strengthening commercial vibrancy
• Better celebrating Mount Gambier’s unique identity and character

CBD Shopfront

For a week commencing Monday 23 March 2026, we transformed a vacant shopfront at 24 Commercial Street West (formerly Youngs the Mans Shop) into a temporary project space. This became a focal point for ideas, conversations and activity in the shaping of the plan, bringing together technical expertise with local community knowledge to form and strengthen key sections of the draft.

We'd like to thank the many people who took the time to drop in and talk with the team, joined a themed discussion or participated in a walking tour. Thank you also to the many community members who provided feedback online via our surveys and mapping tools.

What's next?

The project team are currently working through the range of feedback received from our community and are shaping the Draft CBD Master Plan ready to present this back for further feedback in the near future.
