The South Australian Public Health Act 2011 (the Act) requires the Council to develop a Regional Public Health Plan in line with the State Public Health Plan 2019-2024.

The City of Mount Gambier Regional Public Health Plan (RPHP) 2021-2026 is the second plan of its kind and has been developed under legislation which identifies Council as the relevant local public health authority for its area.

The RPHP incorporates the priority areas from the State Public Health Plan 2019-2024:

  • Promote: Build stronger communities and healthier environments
  • Protect: Protect against public and environmental health risks and respond to climate change
  • Prevent: Prevent chronic disease, communicable disease and injury
  • Progress: Strengthen the systems that support public health and wellbeing.

The draft Public Health Plan 2021 - 2026 assesses Council’s current actions towards public health and highlights twelve focus areas for our community, which Council will endeavour to target over the five year duration of the plan. During the implementation of this plan Council will work to create strong partnerships with relevant local and state stakeholders. The focus areas include;

  • Poor Nutrition and Diet
  • Obesity & Overweight
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Potentially Avoidable Hospital Admissions
  • Degenerative & Mobility for the Aged
  • Substance Abuse (tobacco, illicit drugs and alcohol)
