The Main CornerWHAT MAKES US UNIQUE

Council have developed a theme for the design, construct, display and activities that underpin the entire Main Corner Complex and the role it plays in building community capacity and learning.

The fundamental question was “What makes Mount Gambier unique?” The answer lies in our volcano – that one natural phenomenon that created the foundation of Mount Gambier and the fundamental elements of Earth – Fire – Water that emerged from the volcano to bring us life.

The elements of Earth – Fire – Water are uniquely Mount Gambier and the building features internal and external displays showcasing these elements. In addition the Cave Garden environment is transformed at night to tell the unique Dreamtime Stories of our indigenous persons.

Shape the future of The Main Corner complex, help us compile photos and stories from the past and chat about the Main Corner.

Did you know that there are many ghost stories and sightings that have been witnessed in the Institute building and Cave Garden area? We'd love to hear about your encounters! We'd also love to recapture some memories of the wonderful performances within the Old King's Theatre, and are seeking clubs and theatre groups to submit photos that we can have on display.

Use the tabs below to participate in conversations about what you'd like to see at The Main Corner complex... or perhaps what you have already seen.

Mount Gambier’s Garden Square will overflow with activities on Sunday, 9th December 2012 as we celebrate the Main Corner’s first birthday, and the Mount Gambier Library’s Christmas markets.

The Garden Square is a place where nature meets culture, and incorporates some of the city’s greatest landmark locations such as the Cave Garden, our award winning Library and Main Corner complex, SA’s premier regional Art Gallery The Riddoch, Country Arts SA, The Old Town Hall and the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.

Join us in a day-long celebration, kicking off with the Library’s largest markets ever with extended hours from 11am to 4pm and situated throughout the Library, library verandah, Civic Centre and City Hall verandah.

Pick up some quality handmade local arts, crafts and delicacies for your loved ones for Christmas. There will be plenty of food on offer including picnic specials from Sorrentos at the Main in City Hall. Bring a rug or chairs and situate yourselves in the Cave Garden for a day of free live local musical entertainment, as well as plenty of fun for the kids including a bouncy castle, giant slide, dunking machine, badge making, Christmas tree decorating and more.

There’s everything from Carols by fairylights for the little ones in the library, to a 30 piece orchestra and choir in the Main Corner Foyer. Every inch of the Garden Square will be packed with entertainment for the entire family and as the day turns to dusk the big outdoor screen in the Cave Garden will provide some moonlight cinema.

Join in the Main Corner first birthday celebrations and kick start the festive season on Sunday, 9th December 2012 from 11am until 9.30pm, in Mount Gambier’s Garden Square.
