Will there be a free open day for the public to walk through or a guided tour of the Wulanda Recreation and Community Centre when it opens

Greg asked over 1 year ago

    Thank you for your question.

With the opening date for the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre now confirmed, Council has commenced work on a range of activities to celebrate. These activities will be promoted through Council's various channel as we moved closer to the opening date.

Are the blue recycling bins still being sorted and recycled or just mixed with landfill?

Alex Bailey asked almost 5 years ago

    Thanks for your question.

All of Mount Gambier’s kerbside recycling goes to the Green Triangle Recyclers facility in Mount Gambier. There it is sorted into different categories – paper, cardboard, metal, glass, PET plastic (#1), HDPE plastic (#2) etc.

The materials are baled and then sent to other facilities to be turned into new products.

The recycling industry is an open market, where recycling processors sell their material where they can get the highest price. Here are some examples of what happens to Mount Gambier’s recycling:
    • Cardboard and mixed paper are sent to facilities in Victoria and New South Wales where they are turned into new recycled paper products.
    • Newspaper is sent to Adelaide where it’s turned into kitty litter.
    • PET plastic (#1) is sent to Sydney where it’s turned into plastic bottles.
    • HDPE plastic (#2) is sent to Moama NSW where it’s turned into drainage pipes.
Only contamination from recycling bins is sent to landfill. This highlights the importance of making sure you don’t contaminate your recycling bin.

As an avid walker, runner and bike rider in Mount Gambier, I would first of all like to congratulate the council on the Rail Trail. What a fantastic initiative. Now that the Rail Trail is established, I would like to see it improved by establishing a 'linear park' type landscaping along the trail with more trees, gardens and picnic tables and seats to promote even more public use. The area at the old station is fantastic, but needs to be continued each way from there with the trail to Hastings Cunningham reserve and Pick Avenue a priority. I would also like to see the Rail Trail have more off chutes to the towns tourist hotspots like you have done to the dog park. My suggestions include, the lakes precinct, the Lady Nelson, Engelbrecht cave etc. I also think that the Lakes themselves need to be developed more. I have visited Cataract Gorge in Launceston (Tas) on many occasions and each time think that Mount Gambier could develop the lakes area in a similar way. I believe that the lakes area, although beautiful, is largely wasted as the tourist go for a drive, jump out at a few lookouts, say it is beautiful and then drive off to the next destination. The valley lake playground has been a great start, but it needs much more. I believe it definately requires a cafe or similar. Speaking of Cafe's, there is definitely a need for a cafe or restaurant which overlooks the Blue Lake. It is our greatest tourist icon and we cannot even sit down with a coffee and admire it. One last point. I often walk/run/ride down to the Valley Lake and the track down, adjacent to the Armco railing is in very poor condition, especially near the bottom. It would be great if the council would upgrade this such that it became an all purpose track for both pedestrians and cyclist, like the rail trail. A link to the actual Rail Trail would be great, but I'm not sure if that is possible. Keep up the good work. Harry Thurlings.
