The City of Mount Gambier wants to make sure our city is welcoming and accessible for everyone. This means making it easier for people with disability to take part in community life, feel respected, and have the same opportunities as others.

Developed by our community, the Mount Gambier 2035 Community Vision, is a long-term plan for our city. It identifies accessibility as one of its key principles that should guide everything we do together.

To help make this happen, the City of Mount Gambier has been working with our community develop its next Disability Action and Inclusion Plan (DAIP).

The DAIP guides our efforts to identify and remove barriers, promote equity, and embed inclusive practices across all areas of Council’s work - including what we do, what we support and what we speak up about (advocate for).

The DAIP aligns with the State Disability Inclusion Plan which introduces 5 key domains under which actions are grouped. These include:

  • Inclusive Environments and Communities
  • Education and Employment
  • Personal and Community Support
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Safety, Rights and Justice

The City of Mount Gambier has shaped its actions through meaningful engagement with people with lived experience of disability, families, carers, service providers, and the broader community, ensuring that local priorities and perspectives are at the heart of the plan.

To inform the Plan, engagement with our community has included:

  1. A co-design process facilitated in partnership with Purple Orange, which has brought together members of our community with lived experience of disabiltiy, Elected Members and Council staff together througout the development of the DAIP. This process has shaped key actions within the DAIP and define the systems to support their delivery.
  2. An ideas board which invited members of our community to identify the most important local actions that the City of Mount Gambier can prioritise in the delivery of the new DAIP. This closed on Monday 6 October.
  3. An initial call for submissions via phone, e-mail or through this page, which closed on Monday 6 October.

This activity guided the development of the Draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, which was has been released for community feedback. An Easy Read version of the draft is also available.
